Fast Forward 2.0

Joitakin neulemalleja tulee toistettua kerta toisensa jälkeen.

I like to repeat myself by knitting same patterns time and again.

Malli/pattern: Fast Forward by Veera Välimäki
Lanka/Yarn: Austermann Algarve, 100% puuvilla/cotton, 50 g = 142 m
Fiilis/Vibes: Jippii! / Yippee!

Veera Välimäen raitatunikat ovat minulle sellaisia. Kun yksi on valmistunut, tekee mieli aloittaa uusi!

Veera Välimäki's striped tunics, they are so my cup of tea! Let's get started the new one right now!

Breathing Space 2.0

Malli/Pattern: Breathing Space by Veera Välimäki
Langat/Yarn: Rico Design Essentials Cotton DK, 50 g/130 m, 460 g.

My second Breathing Space was quickly made of thick, DK-weight cotton yarn. Of course, the gauge did not match with the original pattern. The only problem was that in the middle of knitting it was necessary to change the size due to too low armholes. I started knitting according to size XS, and I went to follow S-size instructions. For this reason, the raglan lines of the yoke do not go directly to the bottom of the underarms. They go a few loops to the side. I decided to ignore this little problem and it was a wise decision. The small fault in raglan line is not visible.

This time I also made all the increases of the body part, making the body wide and spherical.

Tämän puseron ainoa ongelma on se, ettei muita neuleita tee enää mieli käyttääkään!

The only problem with this sweater is that I do not want to use any other knitwear anymore!

Puolipatenttia / Half Brioche Sweater

Malli/Pattern: Universal Brioche Sweater by Anna Verschik
Lanka/Yarn: MarLen 100 % puuvillalanka/cotton yarn, 100g = 335 m, 405 g.
Puikot/Needles: 2,25 mm.

I got something after all finished this spring: Anna's Universal Brioche Sweater. There were KAL in Ravelry about this sweater in March.

Patenteissa neulotaan kaksi kerrosta, jotta saadaan aikaan yksi patenttikerros. Tästä syystä neulominen saattaa kestää kauemmin kuin yksikertaisten neulosten neulominen. Puolipatentissa neuloksen nurjalla puolella neulotaan langankiertojen sijaan 1 oikein, 1 nurin -joustinneuletta.

In brioche knitting, it takes two "passes" to complete a single row of knitting, since only half the stitches are knitted each time. The other half are slipped. For this reason, it also takes more time than knitting simple knit-purl combinations or pattern made with yarn-over stitches. In half-brioche stitch this so called brioche stitch has alternated with purls on the wrong side. The sides (wrong and right) looks different. It may be easier to knit, but it has all the typical characteristics of  brioche stitches. The typical stretching of the width direction of (half-)brioche stitches surprised me and sweater became wider than I thought, although I made a swatch and careful calculations. It also took time surprisingly lot.

Mainio perusneule siitä kuitenkin tuli!

However, I got wonderful new basic sweater!

Matkaneule / Travel Knitting

Kesämatkamme oli pitkä, joten ehdin myös neuloa.

Our summer journey was long, so I had plenty of time to knit.

Malli/Pattern: Quinn Sweater by Amy Gunderson
Lanka/Yarn: Rico Design Essentials Cotton DK.

The top is knitted seamless and top down. The back is shaped using short-rows and there are increases between the airy lace panels in the yoke. The neckline was too wide and that's why I modified it smaller. Correspondingly, increases had to be done more frequently in the yoke.

In this top I used a trusted old friend Rico Design cotton yarn and it didn't betrayed me this time either.

Topin juju on vinossa helmassa, joka saadaan aikaan lyhennetyillä kerroksilla. Kääntymispaikkana on aina sama kohta oikealla sivulla.

The point of this top is slanted hem, which is made with short rows. The turnaround is always the same point on the right side.

Quinn oli hauska neulomiskokemus, vaikka miehustan massiivinen modaus vei vähän intoa. Samalla vaivalla olisi jo suunnitellut jotain omaa.

Quinn was a fun knitting experience, but a massive modding in the yoke took a bit of my enthusiasm. At the same time and effort I would have designed something my own.

Se onnistuneempi KAL ja neuletapaaminen Tallinnassa More succesful KAL and knitting together in Tallinn

Toukokuussa Anna järjesti yhteisneulonnan Particular -topista. Osallistuin siihen oikopäätä, vaikka puikoillani oli samaan aikaan mysterihuivi väriongelmineen.

Osallistujille annettiin melko vapaat kädet, mutta minä seurailin tunnollisesti Annan version asetuksia. Kuten on aiemminkin käynyt ilmi, meillä on yhteneväinen maku monessa asiassa, kuten yksityiskohtien määrässä.

In May, I took part in the another KAL also in addition to the mystery scarf KAL and the problem with the colours. Anna organized it for Particular -top.

The participants were given a fairly free hand, but I faithfully followed Anna's version of top. As it has already been found, we have a consistent flavor in many matters, such as the amount of detail.

This KAL went well and the structure of this top was very familiar to me. The only change I made was adding plenty of stitches to the hips as always.

The yarn I used was Fibranatura Cottonwood 100% organic cotton, and the consumption was 220 g. Yarn was pleasant acquaintance and nice to knit and there are lots of colours, but unfortunately its production has been discontinued. One yarn shop in Helsinki sells it yet.

Toppi pääsi käyttöön Tallinnan reissullani muutama päivä sitten, jossa tapasin Annan ja Kristiinan pitkästä aikaa. Neuloimme yhdessä ja päivitimme kuulumiset.

I weared this top in Tallinn trip a few days ago, where I met Anna and Kristiina after a long time. We knitted together and told the latest news.

Kiitokset vielä mukavasta päivästä, Anna ja Kristiina!

Aitäh, Anna ja Kristiina!

Thanks for a nice day, Anna and Kristiina!

Horroksessa / Hibernating

Kevät tuli ja blogi vaipui horrokseen. Kesäkin ehti puoleen väliin, kun viimein havahduin siihen, ettei blogissa ole tapahtunut mitään reiluun kahteen kuukauteen.

Spring came, and this blog fell into hibernation. The summer managed to halfway until I finally woke up: blog has been silent for two months.

Puikoillani on tapahtunut vaikka mitä.

There has been lot of happening in my needles.

Esimerkiksi pääsiäisen tienoilla luotu turkoosi versio Something Simple -neuleesta valmistui puolivälissä toukokuuta.

For example,  turquoise version of Something Simple cardigan casted on around Easter was completed in mid-May.

There is nothing new in this cardi. The yarn mix is also the same than before: Estonian fool Aade 8/2 (230 g) with Midara thin 3 ply linen yarn (130 g).

It became a decent jacket to the first cool days of autumn. Fortunately, this will take a long time.

Teal Blue Sweater

Kevät on ollut pitkä ja kylmä. Tai ainakin se on tuntunut siltä.

Piti saada kevyt, mutta lämmin kevätneule. Ensimmäiseksi tuli mieleen mohair. Sen jälkeen ohut villalanka. Sekoitin ne yhteen.

Spring has been a long and cold here in Finland. Or at least it has felt that way.

I had to have lightweight, but warm sweater for spring time. The first thing came to my mind was mohair yarn. After that I thougt about thin wool yarn. I mixed them together.

Malli/Pattern: oma/own
Langat/Yarns: Classic Yarn King Kid Silk (70 % Super Kid Mohair, 30 % Silk) 85 g, Midara Haapsalu Shawl Yarn (100 % wool) 55 g.
Puikot/Needles: 4,0 mm ja 4,5 mm
Fiilis/Feelings: Upea! /Gorgeous!

Neule on tehty samoin kuin tämä mohairpusero. Ainoa uusi juttu on yhden lehden pitsiraita sivuilla.

The sweater is made similarly as this mohair sweater. The only new thing is the one leaf pattern panel in sides.

Lämmintä toukokuuta odotellen!

I look forward to May and hope it will be warm!

Uudella kierroksella / In the second round

En yleensä pura valmiita neuleita, vaikken olisi niihin tyytyväinen. Kierrätän käyttämättä jääneet neuleeni eteenpäin yleensä joko työkavereilleni tai ystävilleni.

Tämän neuleen (ja langan) kohdalla tein poikkeuksen.

I usually do not rip the finished knittings, even though I would not be satisfied with them. I recycle unused knitwear forward usually either to co-workers or friends.

With this pullover (and yarn) I made an exception.

Coburn merinosta neulottuna ei toiminutkaan käytössä. Ensinnäkin neule jäi liian lyhyeksi, sillä lanka loppui. Toiseksi merinosta neulottuna neuleen pallomuoto kyllä säilyi hyvin, mutta neule ei laskeutunut ollenkaan, vaan helma kiipesi kohti kainaloita. Olen pitkäselkäinen, joten muutenkin niukkapituisen neuleen kohoaminen tuntui erityisen kiusalliselta. Lanka on kuitenkin laadukasta Marabrigon Arroyoa, lempilankaani, joten päätin purkaa neuleen ja käyttää ihanan langan viisaammin.

Coburn Pullover knitted with merino wool was not working at all. First, pullover was too short, because I ran out of yarn. Second, the ball shape of pullover remained well, but it did not drape at all when wearing it and the hem climbed toward the underarms. I have a long back, so short, constantly rising pullover felt particularly uncomfortable. The yarn is, however, high-quality Marabrigo Arroyo merino wool yarn (and so my cup of tea), so I decided to rip the knitting and use a lovely yarn more wisely.

Malli/Pattern: Basket Yoke Pullover by Wendy Bernard, knit.wear, Premiere 2011
Lanka/Yarn: Malabrigo Arroyo, Reflecting Pool, 380 gPuikot/Needles: 3,75 mm and 4.0 mm

Päätin uusiokäyttää langan lisäksi myös neuleen mallin. Edellisen kerran neuloin Basket Yoke Pulloverin kolme vuotta sitten.

I decided to reuse the knitting pattern also. I knitted Basket Yoke Pullover three years ago. However, The yarn I was using was too varied so the Andalusian Stitches/Basket Weave pattern did not show in the knitted surface. That's why I gave the pullover to my colleague. Arroyo Malabrigo is not so varied and beautiful Basket Weave pattern stands out better. An exception to the original model is that the pattern continues in sleeves also.

Olen tyytyväinen. Neule sopii erityisen hyvin Suomen koleaan kevätsäähän.

I'm satisfied with it. This pullover is particularly well suited to chilly spring weather here in Finland.

Huivimania / Scarf Mania

Toinen Aurelia neuloutui kuin itsestään.

Another Aurelia were knitted almost by herself.

Malli/Pattern: Aurelia Cowl by Hilary Smith Callis
Lanka/Yarn: Pirtinkehräämö, kainuunharmas karstalanka/ karded wool yarn from Finnish native breed 350 m/100 g, 100g
Puikot/Needles: 3,75 mm
Fiilis/Feelings: Hieno siitä tuli! / Fine!

Exactly speaking Aurelia is not a scarf, it is a neck warmer or cowl. But now we do not get bogged down in it. The main thing is that  one skein of beautiful and soft yarn is placed on it's destination. My big and bold yarn stash is reducing properly.

Huivittaa / Feels like a scarf

Teki mieli neuloa jotain yksinkertaista ja nopeaa, jonkun valmiiksi miettimää.

I felt like knit something simple and fast, something which has been pre-thought out by somebody.

Malli/Pattern: Aurelia Cowl by Hilaly Smith Callis
Lanka/Yarn: Geilsk Tweed, 100 % Wool, 380 m/100 g, 80 g
Puikot/Needles: 3,75 mm
Fiilis/Feelings: Tyytyväinen/ I'm pleased

Aurelian rakenne on yksinkertainen.

The structure of Aurelia Cowl is simple. It started with a few stitches and it is worked first back and forth rows, then joined and worked in the round to the end. Between the lace pattern there are many increasing rows. The instructions were clear and the cowl was finished within a few days.

Now I'm considering, if I start something completely different or will I start to knit another Aurelia?

Aurelia takaa / Aurelia Cowl from behind

Lanka oli hankittu aikanaan huiviksi. Nyt se on määränpäässään.

The yarn was purchased in due time for a scarf. Now it has completed.

Also, my own Plan B-scarf is progressing, but slowly. It has worked as my travel knitting project both in Tallinn and London. Either journey I did not really have time to knit and it is always a good sign when you are abroad. I figured Plan B -scarf Vilnius last summer on the way, when the actual travel knitting project ran out of yarn and all my yarns and needles were already in the luggage at the hotel, waiting for the return flight. I thought to write instructions of Plan B for the future, because you never know when the yarn runs out again.

Ruma lankaostos / The Ugly Yarn Purchase

Olipa kerran ruma lankaostos. Tein sen Pirtin Kehräämön omassa myymälässä eräänä kesänä ohikulkumatkalla.

Once upon a time there was an ugly yarn in my stash. I bought it in Pirtin Kehräämö factory store in one summer when we were passing by it the way home.

Vannon, että harkitsin langan ostamista kauan kaupassa ollessani. Tietysti "kauan" on suhteellinen käsite kuumana kesäpäivänä muun perheen odottaessa kaupan ulkopuolella matkan jatkumista.

I swear that I considered the purchase carefully. Of course, "carefully" is quite relative term in a hot summer day when rest of the family is waiting for me outside the store. In any case, yarn glowed with beautiful color and whispered to me about all the things it could become. So I made the decision to purchase six skeins of it. I got excited and grabbed also one extraordinary skein of Finnish native breed sheep yarn in beautiful gray tone to my shopping cart. I was happy for purchases in particular because the yarn brand is a Finnish. I was supporting the Finnish entrepreneur.

Tyytyväisenä ostoksiini palasin perheen kanssa kotiin. Mutta kotona lanka ei enää jutellut minulle. Kaunis hehku oli kadonnut. Lanka näytti liian hailakalta ja paksulta minun makuuni. Rumalta. Kainuunharmaskin mökötti. Työnsin rumat langat lankavarastoni uumeniin odottamaan hehkun palaamista.

Satisfied with my purchase, I returned home with the family. But at home yarn was no longer talking to me. Beautiful glow was gone. The yarn seemed too bulky and the color was too light for my taste. The yarn was ugly. The gray Finnish sheep yarn was silent too. I stuck them to my stash to wait for the glow returning.

Aika ajoin kaivoin rumat langat esiin.

From time to time I dug out the ugly yarn from my stash. I tried to talk to it many times, but it remained silent. I tried to provide it to my knitting friend, but she did not like it, and chose something more beautiful yarn.

Yritin löytää langoille sulhasta Vilnasta saakka, jotta hehku palaisi. Tein pieniä koetilkkuja. Maanittelin, kuiskuttelin ja kutsuin. Langat eivät vastanneet minulle. Ne hylkäsivät kaikki tarjoamani sulhaset.

I tried to find a "friend" or "groom" to ugly yarn to return the glow even in Vilnius. I made a small swatches. I coaxed, whispered and called it. Yarn did not respond to me. It rejected all friends and grooms.

Tuli pitkästä aikaa kunnon talvi ja kova pakkanen. Palelin, puin kaksi neuletta päällekkäin ja silti palelin edelleen. Tuli ikävä kesää ja lämmintä säätä. Kävin taas kerran läpi lankavarastoani etsiäkseni pakkasneuleeseen sopivia lankoja ja käsiini osuivat jälleen kerran rumat langat. Tällä kertaa niillä olikin minulle asiaa.

After many years a real winter and a hard frost came in Finland. I was cold and I weared two woolen cardigans on top of each other and still I was feeling cold. I was missing the summer and warm weather. Then I decided to knit something very warm for myself and I looked for my stash to find suitable yarn. Ugly yarn came out once again. This time, it spoked to me.

Viesti oli selvä. Ne halusivat paidaksi. En viivytellyt hetkeäkään, vaan toteutin niiden toiveen heti. Neuloin nopealla vauhdilla, ettei lankojen ääni enää katoaisi. Lankojen hehku palasi, kun esittelin niille komean sulhasen Vilnasta: mustan, laamanvillalla maustetun mohairlangan.

The message was clear. Ugly yarn wanted to be a sweater for cold days. I did hurry up and knitted fast because I did not want to loose my inspiration again. The glow of the yarn returned also after I combined it with handsome groom  from Vilnius: black mohair yarn with the hint of llama wool.

The groom came along just to spice sleeves and high collar, but it was enough. The glow was back to stay.

Muutkin rumat langat haluavat kauniiksi neuleeksi!

The story of the ugly yarn ends happily, but now there are lot of voices in my yarn stash. Other ugly yarns want to change into beautiful knits too!

Verryttelyä / Warming up

Vuoden ensimmäinen neule on valmistunut.

I have finished the very first knitting of new year.

Vanhan kertauksena otin puikoille Jotain Yksinkertaista, jonka olen jo muutamaan kertaan neulonut. Värit toistuvat kuvissa oikein, vaikka tumma lila värisävy on yleensä hankala kuvattava.

I knitted again Something simple as a refresher and combined same yarns like previous times: Aade Long carded wool yarn 8/2 and Siulas 4-ply linen yarn. Both yarns have very intensive tone of purple: linen yarn is bright and intense, wool yarn is darker. The blend is glowing and vibrant. Colours are reproduced in these images correctly although  dark purple tones are usually difficult to photograph correctly.

Jotain Yksinkertaista on nimensä mukaisesti yksinkertainen malli: ei saumoja, neulesuunta ylhäältä alas sekä raglanlevennykset miehustassa, neule minun mieleeni.

Something simple is a simple pattern as the name suggests: no seams, knitting direction from top to bottom, as well as raglan increases at the bust, so my cup of tea.

Lisäksi miehustassa ja hihansuissa on muutama aina oikein -raita. Sivusaumoissa lisäyksiä tasaisin välein A-linjan saavuttamiseksi ja saumalinjassa pystysuora aina oikein -raita, ikäänkuin tekosauma.

In addition, the bust and the cuffs are decorated with a couple of garter stitch tracks . In sides there are additions at regular intervals in order to achieve the A-line. In the seam line there are vertical garter stitch track as if the artificial seam.

Kuvauskaveriksi löysin vaatekaapistani kuvaamattoman Art Teacher -pellavatunikan. Sen kaava on peräisin kaksi vuotta vanhasta Ottobre Desin Woman -lehdestä (syksy/talvi 5/2014) ja toteutus on viime syksyltä.

From my wardrobe I found the perfect combination for my new cardi: an unused linen dress named Art Teacher (from Ottobre Design Woman autumn/winter 2014). I had sewed this dress last autumn, but did not wear it or show it in my blog.

Pellavatunika on laatikkomallinen ja siinä on hauskat taskut edessä. Kumma kyllä, se on jäänyt käyttämättä ja asia on korjattava, kunhan ilmat lämpenee keväisiksi.

Linen dress is box shaped and it has funny pockets on the front. Oddly enough, it has remained unused and this must be corrected, as soon as the weather warms in the spring.

After many snowless and warm years, we have now a real winter also here in southern Finland: Some snow and very cold weather. In winter time like this, of course, it is pleasant to wear woolen knits and that's why my mind is full of many new plans. I've warmed up now and ready to start something new and personal.
