Talvi tulee / Winter is coming

Talvi tulee. Tarvitsin talviversion suosikkilaatikostani.

Winter is coming. I needed the winter version of my favorite BOX sweater.

Tämäkin BOX on neulottu koneella. Lankana on perusvarma Holst Garn Supersoft, väreinä värikartan tummin ja vaalein harmaa Graphite ja Silver Gray. Lankaa meni yhteensä 300g.

This BOX is also knitted with the machine. The yarn is one of my favorite Holst Garn Supersoft, in the darkest and lightest grays Graphite and Silver Gray. BOX took yarn total of 300g.


Pikkuinen perennatarhani on peittynyt lumeen. Istutin siihen pionin taimia viime kesänä. Nyt odotan, että ne selviävät talvesta ja kukkivat ensimmäisen kerran tulevana kesänä. Jotta voisin muistella perennapenkissäni uinuvia juurakoita paremmin, neuloin laatikkoneuleen, jossa toistuvat pionien kukkien värit. Lankana edelleen Holst Garn Supersoft, sävyjen nimet Aubergine, Peony ja Allium ja langan menekki oli yhteensä 290 g.

A little perennial garden is covered now with snow. I planted some peony seedlings there last summer. Now, I expect them to survive the winter and bloom for the first time in the coming summer. In order to be able to remember better my peonies sleeping in my garden, I knitted new BOX sweater with repeating my peony flower colors. The yarn was again Hols Garn Supersoft, yarn colors Aubergine, Peony and Allium. I used yarn total 290 g.

Jämälankavarastoa on taas laihdutettu yhden neuleen verran. Tässä neuleessa kokeilin, miten laatikkoni toimisi pitkänä takkina. Toimiihan se, mutta tuota pääntietä ja napitusta voisin hieman nostaa ylemmäs.

My left over yarn stash has been reduced by one knit. In this sweater, I tried to make my BOX work as a long cardigan. I did it, but next time I could slightly raise that neck and buttoning.

Saat siis tulla, talvi, vaikket olekaan suosikkivuodenaikani. Olen valmis.

So I am ready for you, winter, even if you are not my favorite time of year.

Pussilankaa / Outlet yarn

Piipahdin elokuussa Novitan outletmyymälään Korialla. Siellä silmiini osui yksinäinen pussi sekundalaatuista ohutta Cotton Mercerized -puuvillalankaa. Koska langan väri oli kaunis helmenharmaa ja hinta halpa, ostin pussin oitis enempää miettimättä.

I visited Novita's outlet store in Koria in August. There I found one lonely bag of remnant thin "Cotton Mercerized" cotton yarn. Because the color of the yarn was pretty pearl gray and the price was cheap, I bought a bag without further thought.

Kotona tutkailin saalistani tarkemmin. Lanka osoittautui entiseksi Novitan Kotiväeksi, joka on siis nyt nimetty uudestaan (100 g = 332 m). Pussi sisälsi 8 vajaata kerää samanväristä puuvillalankaa, tosin kerien värierä oli arvoitus.

At home, I viewed my prey more closely. The yarn turned out to be the old Novita Kotiväki, which is now renamed (100 g = 332 m). The bag contained 8 incompleted yarn balls of the same color, although batch of dyes were a mystery.

Neuloin koneella tiheyskokeiluja ja totesin langan soveltuvan mainiosti koneneuleeseen. Sitten tein laskelmia, viritin langat koneeseen ja aloin neuloa.

I knitted gauge tests with the machine and I found that the yarn was ideal for the machine knitting. Then I made some calculations, tuned the yarns to the machine and started to knit.

Lopputulos on mitä mainioin käyttöneule. Tykkään lopputuloksesta paljon, vaikka kerät olivat ainakin kahta eri värjäyserää ja langan paksuudessakin oli pientä vaihtelua. Arkineuleessa ei haittaa, vaikka kerien vaihtumiskohdat huomaa.

It turned to be the best everyday sweater ever! I like the result very much, even though balls were at least two different dyeing batches and there was also a small variation in the thickness of the yarn. Those little things does not matter in everyday sweater.

Harmaita ja musteensinisiä ajatuksia /Gray and Ink Blue Thoughts

Ajatus toisesta koneneulotusta taskutunikasta kirkastui, kun löysin tämän harmaan langan lankavarastoni pohjalta. Lanka on virolaista Elotroin Liisua ensimmäiseltä Tallinnan lankaretkeltäni. Ihastuin tähän värjättyyn harmaan sävyyn niin kovin, että jätin sen odottelemaan parasta mahdollista ideaa vuosiksi. Jemmausvuosia taisi kertyä peräti viisi tälle langalle ennen pääsyä päivänvaloon.

The idea of another machine knitted Pocket Tunic became clear when the I found this gray yarn on the basis of my yarn stash. The yarn is Estonian Elotroi Liisu and I bought it in my first yarn hunt visit to Tallinn. I fell in love with this beautiful dyed gray tone so hard that I left it to wait for years before I used it.

En ajatellut, että Liisu taipuisi koneneuleeseen, sillä se on hivenen paksumpaa (360 m/100 g) kuin Aaden vastaava lanka 8/2 (400 m/100 g). Hyvin se kuitenkin taipui, vaikka langan vetolujuus onkin heikohkoa löysän kierteen vuoksi.


I thought that Liisu is not suitable for knitting machine, because it is slightly thicker (360 m / 100 g) than the corresponding yarn Aade 8/2 (400 m / 100 g). However, it was very usable, even if the tensile strength of the yarn is rather weak and it breaks easily.

Tunikan pääntie on neulottu käsin kuten edellinenkin tunika: aina oikeaa ja viistotus lyhennetyin kerroksin. Hihansuut ja helma ovat tässäkin tunikassa viimeistelemättömät ja rullautuvat miten haluavat. Tällä kertaa neuloin taskupussit koneella osittaisneulontana ja vain taskupussien sivusaumat piti ommella käsin. Napin funktio on pitää taskupussi paikallaan.

The neckline of the tunic is knitted by hand as the previous tunic: using Garter stitch, and shoulders are shaped with short rows. The cuffs and hem are also left without finishing and they roll up the way they want. This time I knitted pocket bags with machine. Only the side seams had to be sewn by hand. The function of the buttons is to keep the pocket bag in place.

But that is not all.

Ostin hauskaa, musteensinistä PaaPiin Korppi -collegeneulosta Tampereen kädentaitomessuilta. (Joo, siellä olin minäkin!) Siitä tuli uusi pallohelmatunika, arkivaatetukseni ykkönen (ja huivin toinen seuralainen).

I bought ink blue knitted fabric with funny raven pattern from Tampere handicraft fair. (Yeah, I was there too!) It became the new tunic with ball shape hem, my casual dress number one (and second compation of new shawl).

Kyllä näillä kelpaa taas kulkea!

Taskutunika / Pocket Tunic

Torkkupeittoja koneneuloessani alkoivat ajatuksissani pyöriä taas laatikkoneuleet.

I started to think again my BOX knits when I was knitting parts of blankets by machine.

Ideaani sopiva lankakin löytyi lankavarastostani: Aade Lõngin yksivärinen 8/2, lempivärini farkunsininen.

I found very suitable from my yarn stash: Aade Lõng Solid 8/2, in my favorite color denim blue.

Laatikon muoto on tällä kertaa kapeampi, mutta pidempi. Myös hihat ovat pitkät. Helma ja kädentiet on jätetty viimeistelemättä ja ne rullautuvat hieman, mikä näyttää hauskalta.

The shape of box is narrower at this time, but the longer. Also, the sleeves are long. Hem and armholes have been left without finalizing and they roll up a bit, which looks like fun.

Tunikan pääntie on neulottu käsin, sillä halusin käyttää siinä aina oikein -neuletta ja muotoilla olkapäitä lyhennetyin kerroksin.

I knitted the neck by hand, because I wanted to use there garter stitch and shape shoulders with short rows.

Halusin tunikaan taskut. Ne on neulottu koneella ja ommeltu paikalleen käsin. Keltaiset napit ovat vain somisteena.

I wanted to get pockets to my tunic. They are knitted by machine and sewn by hand. The yellow buttons are only decoration.

It is perfect everyday garment in wintery weather, I would say.

Tuubihuivin resepti / The Tube Scarf recipe

Lankahelvetin Henna kyseli minulta koneneulotun tuubihuivin ohjetta. Kerron sen mielelläni.

Tuubihuiveihin soveltuvat mainiosti ohuet lace- tai fingering -vahvuiset langat. Koska tuubia pidetään kaulan ympärillä, materiaali ei saa kutittaa eikä ärsyttää ihoa. Olen tehnyt tuubeja villasta, (Holst Garn Supersoft, 287 m = 50 g), villa-silkkisekoitteesta (Holst Garn Samarkand, 287 m = 50 g), alpakasta (Lamana Piura, 400m = 50 g) ja merinon ja puuvillan sekoituksesta (Holst Garn Coast, 350 m = 50 g) Tee koetilkku valitusta langasta, jotta voit säätää koneeseen sopivan tiheyden. Itse pidän löysähköstä neuloksesta tuubeissa, sillä silloin tuubi laskeutuu hyvin ja mukautuu miellyttävästi kaulan ympärille.

Tuubihuivin kokoa kannattaa myös hieman pohtia ennen kuin aloitat. Pituutta huivilla tulisi olla vähintään 170 - 180 cm, jotta se yltää hyvin kaulan ympäri kolme kertaa renkaaksi silmukoituna. Jos haluat, että huivi yltää kaulasi ympäri neljä kertaa, pituutta huivilla tulisi olla 230 cm.

Leveys ei ole niin kriittinen asia kuin pituus. Noin 35-45 cm leveä kaitale toimii hyvin. Jos lankaa on vähän, tee kapeampi huivi.

Harmaassa tuubihuivissa on käytetty Holst Garnin Samarkand -lankaa (287 m = 50 g). Huivissa on 100 silmukkaa ja 500 kerrosta. Huiviin kului 150 g lankaa ja siitä tuli 48 cm leveä ja 180 cm pitkä ennen silmukointia.

Lila tuubihuivi on neulottu Lamana Piurasta (400 m = 50 g). Huivissa on 120 silmukkaa ja 690 kerrosta. Lankaa kului 150 g. Olen neulonut Lamana Piurasta myös kapeamman huivin: 100 silmukkaa, 580 kerrosta ja 100 g lankaa.

Tuubihuivin neuleohje on hyvin yksinkertainen:

1. Luo luomiskamman avulla haluttu määtä silmukoita (100-120 s.) apulangalla ja neulo 6 riviä.

2. Vaihda huivilanka koneeseen ja neulo 500-700 kerrosta riippuen siitä, miten pitkän huivin haluat tai miten paljon lankaa on käytettävissäsi. Jätä huivilankaa muutama gramma päiden silmukoimiseen.

3. Kun haluttu pituus on saavutettu, neulo taas apulangalla 6 kerrosta ja irrota neule koneesta.

4. Höyrytä huivikaitale.

5. Silmukoi huivin päät yhteen ja pura apulankakerrokset pois. Päättele langanpäät ja viimeistele tuubihuivi kastelemalla ja kuivattamalla muotoon tai höyryttämällä toisen kerran.

6. Nauti uudesta huivistasi!

One of my readers asked me how I knit those TUBE scarves with knitting machine.

TUBE scarf is ideally suited to thin lace or fingering weight yarns. The material can not itch or irritate the skin, because TUBE will be held around the neck. I've done the TUBES of wool, (Holst Garn Super Soft, 287 m = 50 g), wool-silk blend (Holst Garn Samarkand, 287 m = 50 g), alpaca (Lama Piura, 400m = 50 g) and a mixture of merino and cotton (Holst Garn Coast, 350 m = 50 g) Remember to make a swatch from the selected yarn, so that you can adjust suitable gauge to the knitting machine. In fact, I like somewhat loose knitting on tubes, because then it will fit well and adapt comfortably around the neck.

You should also consider a size of your TUBE before you start. The length of the scarf should be at least 170 - 180 cm, so that it extends around the neck three times when it is weaved to a circle. If you like to have more length, the scarf should be 230 cm long to reach four times aroung the neck.

The width of the TUBE is not as critical as the length. Approximately 35-45 cm wide TUBE works well. If you have just a little yarn, make a narrow scarf.

Gray TUBE is made of Holst Garn Samarkand yarn (287, m = 50 g). I casted on 100 stitches and knitted 500 rows. Scarf took 150 g of yarn, and it became a 48 cm wide and 180 cm long before weaving.

Purple TUBE is knitted of Lama Piura (400, m = 50 g). I casted on 120 stitches and knitted 690 rows. It took 150 g of yarn. I've been knitting also narrower shawl of the same yarn: 100 stitches, 580 rows and 100 g of yarn.

TUBE pattern is a very simple:

1. Cast on desired amount of stitches (100-120) knit 6 rows with temporary yarn.

2. Change the main yarn to the machine and knit 500-700 rows, depending on how long scarf you want or how much yarn you have. Leave few grams of main yarn to finishing.

3. When the desired length is reached, knit 6 layers rows with temporary yarn again.

4. Steam the strip.

5. Rip the temporary yarn off and graft/weave both ends with Kitchener Stitch. Weave all ends and finish the tube scarf by washing and drying into form or by steaming for the second time.

6. Enjoy your new TUBE scarf!

Revanssi / The New Game

Osallistuin keväällä erään suomalaisen suunnittelijan mysteerihuivin yhteisneulontaan. Lopputulos ei miellyttänyt värisilmääni. Piti virittää oma huivi puikoille ikäänkuin revanssiksi.

I participated one mystery shawl KAL last spring. The result did not please me at all so I had to start new scarf as the new game.

Huivin muoto on tylppäkärkinen kolmio, joka on saatu aikaan tietynlaisesta lisäysten ja kavennusten rytmistä reunoissa: vasemmassa reunassa lisätään yksi silmukka jokaisessa kerroksessa, oikeassa reunassa kavennetaan yksi silmukka joka neljäs kerros.


Revanssi / The New Game
Lanka/Yarn: Howlin' by I Knit or Dye, (100 % merino, 100 g = 450 m), 130 g.


The shawl has shape of a blunt-pointed triangle and that has been achieved a certain degree of increases and decreases at the edges: in the left-hand edge there is added to one stitch on each row, on the right egde one stitch has decreased every fourth row.

Kuvassa oleva pallohelmainen trikootunika on myös oma mallini.


That blue tunic with ball shape hem is also my own design.

Vielä yksi laatikko ja tuubihuivi / One more BOX and TUBE

Yksi yksinäinen koneneulottu laatikko on vielä esittelemättä. Tämä laatikko on käytännössä toisinto tästä viime syksyn laatikosta.

There is one lonely machine knitted BOX sweater left. This BOX is practically just a version of this BOX from last autumn.

BOX V
Midara Roma, 100 % virgin wool, 190 g.

BOX V:n leveys on 60 cm ja pituus 65 cm. Hihoissa on enemmän pituutta kuin BOX II:ssa.

The  width of this BOX is 60 cm and length 65 cm. The sleeves are longer than in BOX II.


Pelastin koneellani myös yhden ufoksi (UnFinished Object eli kesken jäänyt) jääneen neuleen langat tuubiksi.

I also ripped one unfinished knitting object (UFO) and knitted a tube scarf with my knitting machine.

Teal TUBE
Holst Garn Coast Kingfisher, 55% merino, 45% cotton, 190 g.

Nyt ei enää löydy ufoja nyssäköistäni!

Pellavaiset laatikot / Linen BOXes

Kaikista tyytyväisin olen pellavalaatikoihini!

Linen BOX I,
Siulas linen 4ply yarn, 330 g.

Linen TUBE scarf,
Siulas linen 4ply yarn, 140 g.

Himo keltaiseen syttyi viime keväänä, kun näin laukkuosastolla okrankeltaisen pienen käsilaukun. Se oli saatava! Kesällä ostin vielä sitruunankeltaisen ja krominkeltaisen laukun. Vilnan lankakaupoissa en muuta värejä juuri nähnytkään kuin keltaisia.

Keltainen ei sovi minulle kylmää sitruunakeltaista lukuunottamatta, enkä halua käyttää sitä lähellä kasvojani. Se on kuitenkin hyvä kontrasti sinisille ja harmaille, jotka taas ovat omia värejäni.

Vastapainoksi keltaisella hurjastelulle neuloin vielä hillitymmän tummansinisen ja harmaan laatikon.


My addict to yellow color flamed last spring, when I saw a small handbag in ocher yellow tone in bag store. I just had to buy it! In the summer I bought two bags more: one lemon yellow and crome yellow. In Vilnius I just saw only yellow yarns.

Yellow does not suit me at all. Only exception is cold lemon yellow, that is my color. However I do not want to use yellow tone close to my face. Anyway, yellow is a good contrast to the blue and gray, which again are my colors.

To counteract this the yellow foolery I knitted one more BOX with dark blue and gray linen yarn.

Siulas linen 4ply yarn, 330 g.

The width of BOXes is 80cm and a length 70 cm.

Holstien tuhoamisen jälkeen halusin testata, kuinka käsinvärjätty Rohrspatz & Wollmeisen Lace -lanka taipuu koneelle.

After using all Holst Garn yarns I wanted to test, is handdyed Rohrspatz Wollmeise Lace suitable for knitting machine.


Hyvinhän se taipui!

Purple BOX,
Rohrspatz & Wollmeise Lace Lila Ludmila, 100 % superwash merino, 300 g.





Wollmeisen Lace myydään 300 g:n vyyhdeillä, joka riitti mainiosti yhteen puseroon. Hihat ovat aavistuksen verran vajaamittaiset.

Wollmeise Lace is sold in skeins of 300 g of yarn, which was enough to one sweater. However, the sleeves are slightly less than full length.

Black BOX,
Rohrspatz & Wollmeise Lace 82 Pb, 100 % superwash merino, 300 g.

Bonnilaisen myyjän rohkaisemana hankin itselleni Lace -lankaa myös mustana. Tarkalleen ottaen värisävyn nimi on Pb eli lyijy. Vyyhdillä lanka näytti tasaisen mustalta. Myyjä kertoi, että värisävy on lähempänä tummaa harmaata ja epätasainen, kuten käsinvärjätty vanka aina on. Oikeassa oli. Olen ihan varma siitä, että tämä pusero tulee olemaan arkivaatetukseni kulmakivi tänä syksynä!

The yarn shop keeper in Bonn encouraged me to buy this yarn in this color tone. The name of this tone is Pb (the chemical symbol for lead). In hanks yarn looked like solid black. The seller told me that the color is closer to dark gray and it is semi solid, such as handdyed yarn always is. She was right. I am quite sure that this sweater will be the cornerstone of my everyday outfit this fall!

Erityisen tyytyväinen olen mustan BOXin pääntiehen. Se istuu hyvin.

I am particularly pleased with the neckline of this sweater. It fits well.

Molemmat BOXit ovat 65 cm leveitä ja 65 cm pitkiä. Myös väljyys ja pituus osuivat tässä setissä nappiin!

Both BOX sweaters are 65 cm wide and 65 cm long. Also, this lenght and width is perfect for me.

Laatikkoneuleita I / BOX sweaters I

Arki on rynninyt Lepopuikolle sellaisella voimalla, että hengästyttää. Menee voimat ja uuvuttaa. Neulomishommat eivät luista, vaikka ideoita olisi, mutta eipä ole niille juuri nyt aikaakaan.

Everyday life has arrived with such force that I am out of breath, exhausted and powerless. Knitting projects are not working. I do have lot of ideas, but I don't not have any time for knitting.

Laatikot olen sentään saanut viimeinkin viimeisteltyä. Urakka paisui melko suureksi, sillä tulin koneneuloneeksi osat peräti seitsemään puseroon! Meinasin jo lannistua urakkaani, mutta etenin sitkeästi sauma kerrallaan.

Finally I got all my BOX sweaters finished although the BOX project swelled up pretty big, because I knitted parts for seven sweaters in all! I almost disheartened, but proceeded stubbornly one seam at a time.


Muistan kuitenkin selkeästi heinäkuiset suunnitelmani koneneuleiden suhteen. Ensiksi halusin käyttää kaikki Holst Garnin Supersoft -keräni katumusharjoituksena kesän lankahankinnoille. Holsteja oli sekalainen kokoelma erilaisissa harmaan sävyissä, määrät tai värierät vaihtelivat 50 g - 250 g väriä kohden. Älä kysy, mitä olin miettinyt ne hankkiessani.

However, I remember clearly what I planned to with my knitting machine in July. First of all, I wanted to use all Holst Garn Super Soft -balls as a penance for my summer yarn purchases. I had a mixed collection of various shades of gray ranged from 50 g - 250 g per color. Do not ask me what I had thought about them when purchasing.








































Gray BOX
Holst Garn Supersoft, 100 % wool, 250 g.

Ensimmäisestä laatikosta tuli tämän sarjan suurin: leveyttä siinä on 70 cm ja korkeutta 60 cm.

The first BOX sweater in this series became the largest: the width is 70 cm and height of 60 cm.

Toiseen laatikkoneuleeseen upotin kaikki tummat ja vaaleat harmaat Holstit.


I used all the dark and light gray yarns for the second BOX sweater.

Dark and Light BOX
Holst Garn Supersoft, 100 % wool, 200 g.

Tämä laatikko  on vastaavasti mitoiltaan sarjan niukin: leveyttä siinä on vain 55 cm ja korkeus on 60 cm.

This BOX is the narrowest: it is only the width of 55 cm and a height of 60 cm.








































Selkäpuolelta näkyy, että tummaa harmaata on kahta eri sävyä.

In the back there are two different shades of gray.
